Shadow of the Real World

A few musings from Kansas by a high school literature teacher. Over the past few months, this blog has turned a commentary on media. I will probably continue to focus on film and television, but books and music might sneak in... By the way - If you would like me to post on a regular basis - please comment, even if it's just to say, "Hi." If my audience disappears, I lose the motivation to write! Thanks!

Long time, no post

Well - it's been months. I really don't have an excuse. Could say "real life," but isn't that always there? So - what have I been up to lately? Teaching, teaching, and more teaching. Along with the various social activities that go along with my oh-so-active social life. :-)

Anyway - I had some friends over to watch Get Shorty on Saturday afternoon as a prelude to catching Be Cool later that night. Those of us who had seen Get Shorty loved it as much as ever, but the newbies thought that Be Cool was much funnier. I'm not sure why. I think the comedy in the second one is a bit broader and more visual. The language didn't seem to be quite as tight. I'll need to see it again to really have an informed opinion.

Is it just me or does the movie landscape right now seem particularly dry? It could just be that I am living in the Siberia of the USA. (Also known as Kansas.) My town has one movie theater with 12 screens and 6 of those are being remodeled. Yes folks - we have six movie screens for a town of 45,000 people and half of those people are college students! Crazy... (and frustrating.)

I'm trying to think of media that I have been watching lately. I have always stayed away from NCIS because I thought it was a rip off of JAG (and I don't particularly like JAG.) However, I found out that Michael Weatherly (Logan "Eyes Only" from Dark Angel) is in it. This sparked my interest. I found NCIS to be quite the entertaining little show. The characters are fun and don't seem to be carbon copies of other shows. They have terrific chemistry and the line delivery is spot on. If you like crime shows - it's one to catch.

Speaking of crime shows -- I've been thinking of the various incarnations of CSI that are on right now. I am watching all three, but I have problems with all three. The first one is all about the puzzle. How do we solve the mystery? That's okay, but character is what compels me to watch a show. I so wish that these characters could grow. It makes me read as much CSI fanfic as I can find. (That's a whole other topic of its own.)

CSI:Miami has it's strengths and weaknesses... The major weakness is that David Caruso CANNOT act. Well - maybe he can, but his line delivery is atrocious. Could he please stop putting awkward pauses in the middle of his lines? That is not emoting - it's searching for the line you forgot... Anyway - the thing that makes me keep coming back to Miami is that the characters seem to care about the victims. It's more than just a puzzle to them. They search for justice and to save the helpless and lost. To give a voice to those that don't have one. I like that.

CSI:New York has other issues... First of all - who are these people? Why am I supposed to care about them?? PLEASE give me some insight into them. We are more than halfway through the season and I still don't care. I understand a slow reveal, but this is absurd.

As for my other shows -

Las Vegas - Josh Duhamel, need I say more? Actually - the Danny/Mary dynamic hooked me. I'm a sucker for good UST.

Gilmore Girls - I watch it for the writing. Wow dialogue... If Amy leaves - the show will die.

One Tree Hill - addicted to the teen soap drama!

The West Wing - Still hanging on, but sorely miss Aaron Sorkin. If only he could return... (Also - the Josh/Donna UST.)

Smallville - Tom Welling is the most beautiful person on TV.

Lost - Ian Somerhalder (maybe he wins for most beautiful??) Also - intrigued with the mystery,
but it better be a good reveal. Or this is the only season for me!

The O.C. - even better teen soap drama!! Bring on the angst!! (not to mention the meta-textual discussion of their own show.)

Sci-Fi Friday - (Stargate:SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica) - Science Fiction, what's not to like?

Num3ers - good looking geeky men - my favorite! And it's actually starting to make me like Math. Who wouda thunk it?

Yep - I watch way too much TV. In my own defense - I record everything I watch and view it later at my own convenience. That way I can fast forward the commercials and pause for snacks...

Okay - I've got to sign off and plan for my classes tomorrow. I'll try to post more often! :-)
